Saratoga's Fall Handoffs, From 440 Broadway To The Wilton Mall Food Court

Between late September and the first week of November, downtown Saratoga Springs is closing a long-running restaurant, holding its biggest family afternoon of the fall and moving its farmers market out of High Rock Park. Each of those endings already has a successor with a name or a date. The gaps between one thing closing and the next one starting are short, and most of them can be measured in days.

Here's the run of dates as they stand now:

  1. Saturday, September 26: Wheatfields Restaurant & Bar served its last dinner at 440 Broadway.
  2. Thursday, October 1: The Scene Coffee & Cocktails announced it will open its second location in that same space.
  3. Saturday, October 24: The 25th annual Fall Fest runs downtown from noon to 3 p.m.
  4. Wednesday, October 28: The last scheduled outdoor Wednesday market at High Rock Park.
  5. Saturday, October 31: The last scheduled outdoor Saturday market.
  6. Saturday, November 7: The indoor market opens at the Wilton Mall Food Court.
  7. Thursday, December 3: The 40th Victorian Streetwalk on Broadway.

A Broadway Dining Room Got Its Next Tenant In Five Days

Wheatfields had been on Broadway since 1988. Tim and Colleen Holmes bought it from the original owner in 2004, and according to Saratoga TODAY, the last dinner service was Saturday, September 26. In a Facebook post quoted by the paper, the owners thanked guests for "22 unforgettable years in downtown Saratoga Springs." The Holmeses aren't leaving the area. They still run Wheatfields Bistro & Wine Bar in Clifton Park and Beer Wine Pizza in Saratoga.

Five days after that last dinner, Saratoga TODAY reported that Mariana and Nick Forbes will open the second location of The Scene Coffee and Cocktails at 440 Broadway. Their first location opened at 1671 Western Avenue in Albany in July 2023. The new owners presented the move as a handoff from one family business to another, and Mariana Forbes thanked the Holmeses directly in the paper's report:

"So many Saratogians have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and everyday moments in that space, and we don't take that lightly. We are honored to carry that spirit of gathering forward."

The Scene will run on a different schedule than the dinner room it replaces. Plans call for a dedicated coffee bar next to a traditional bar, morning drinks like the Cinnamon French Toast Latte, brunch dishes like the Veggie Scramble and Chicken Pesto Panini, and an evening cocktail lounge serving shareable plates such as Tomato and Burrata and a Beef Slider Trio. Live music and DJs are planned for select nights. A space that was mostly known for dinner is set to open in the morning too.

What's still missing is a date. The owners said an opening date and hours "will be announced in the coming months," and the Instagram account @thescenecoffeeny is where they've said updates will appear. Until then, 440 Broadway is the one spot on this fall's calendar where the successor is known but the timing isn't.

October 24 Puts The Whole Handoff On One Hill

Fall Fest is the afternoon when the old summer rhythm and the new fall one overlap. The Downtown Business Association lists the 25th annual event for Saturday, October 24, from noon to 3 p.m. It's also one of the last Saturdays the farmers market is at High Rock Park. The outdoor market runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., so for one hour that afternoon both are open downtown together. The market is part of Fall Fest, too. The DBA's activity list includes a harvest photo, a pumpkin-weight guessing contest and pumpkin painting at the Saratoga Farmers' Market.

Trick-or-treating starts at noon. Participating downtown businesses hand out candy to children in costume, and maps are available at the Visitors Center. The DBA's list of stops includes Saratoga Arms Hotel, G. Willikers, Putnam Market, The Adelphi, The Saratoga Candy Co., Celtic Treasures and Menges & Curtis along Broadway. Off Broadway, it includes the Saratoga Springs Public Library Coffee & Book Shop at 49 Henry Street and Vessel by Saratoga Clay Arts Center at 80 Henry Street. The association says new locations are being added daily, so the list will likely grow before the 24th.

Also on the schedule:

  • Road Soda Pop playing live at Salt & Char
  • Face painting at G. Willikers
  • Magic Matt at Menges & Curtis
  • Sparkles the Juggler on Broadway
  • Maple cotton candy at Spa City Motor Lodge
  • A free book at the library

The afternoon ends with the pumpkin roll. Dance Lab volunteers hand out pumpkins from Sunnyside Gardens at the corner of Caroline and Broadway. Participants roll them down the hill between hay bales from Vincek Farm, and Rotary volunteers at Caroline and Maple give out gift certificates to Ben & Jerry's and Strike Zone. Andrea Mulholland summed up the day for WNYT: "you can end the day with the pumpkin roll right down Caroline Street."

The association hasn't posted a rain date or a weather plan for the event as a whole. The only item marked "weather permitting" is the author book signing at Crafter's Gallery.

The Market Moves North, And Wednesday Drops Off

The farmers market's move indoors is the biggest change to a weekly routine this fall. Unlike most of the other handoffs, it comes with a real loss.

Through October, the Saratoga Farmers' Market meets at High Rock Park, 112 High Rock Avenue, twice a week. The Saratogian's October 8 calendar lists the Wednesday market at High Rock on October 28 from 3 to 6 p.m. and an outdoor market on Saturday, October 31. October 31 is the last Saturday of the market's May-through-October season, so Halloween is scheduled as the final outdoor morning.

The indoor season starts the next Saturday, November 7, at the Wilton Mall Food Court, 3065 NY-50. The market's vendor page lists only Saturday dates for the indoor season.

Outdoor season Indoor season
Location High Rock Park, 112 High Rock Ave. Wilton Mall Food Court, 3065 NY-50
Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Wednesdays 3 to 6 p.m. Not on the indoor schedule
Last or first date Oct. 28 and Oct. 31 Saturdays, Nov. 7 through April 24

So the Saturday market keeps going with no break, half an hour later in the day and a short drive north of downtown. The after-work Wednesday market doesn't move indoors. The last one at High Rock Park is October 28.

Some of the indoor lineup will also be temporary. Vendors could sign up for the full season, which runs to April 24, or for a holiday season that ends December 26. That means the mix of tables in the food court between November and late December may look different from January onward.

December Is Already On The Calendar

The next big downtown evening comes about a month after the market moves. The Downtown Business Association lists the 40th annual Victorian Streetwalk for Thursday, December 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Broadway. The association says details for 2026 are coming later this fall, so the date and hours are the only firm information so far.

New Year's Eve is set too. Saratoga.com lists free outdoor entertainment from DJ RVMBA and fireworks on Ellsworth Jones Place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on December 31. More programming is still to be announced.

Put together, the stretch from the last Wheatfields dinner on September 26 to the Streetwalk on December 3 runs about ten weeks. Broadway gets a new tenant lined up within days of a closing. Caroline Street hosts the pumpkin roll a week before the outdoor market wraps up. The Saturday market goes from High Rock Park to Wilton without missing a weekend. Still to come are an opening date for The Scene at 440 Broadway, the full Streetwalk details and the rest of the New Year's Eve program.
